US President-elect Joe Biden announced today (Saturday) a series of new appointments to the State Department, including veterans of the Obama administration in which he served as vice president.

They represent an opposite style to that of the outgoing Trump administration, which espoused the nationalist and anti-globalist "America First" policy.

Among the prominent names announced today is Wendy Sherman, the architect of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, which also drafted a nuclear deal with North Korea under President Bill Clinton.

She will be the Deputy Foreign Minister.

In addition, Victoria Noland, who was ambassador to Ukraine at the time of the ouster of the pro-Russian president in 2014 and supported the protesters, will be the foreign secretary of state for politics - the third most important role in the day-to-day management of American diplomacy.

Biden said the candidates and candidates had achieved "some of the most important security and diplomatic achievements in recent times."

The president-elect, who will be sworn in on January 20, said he was "confident they will use their diplomatic experience to restore America's global and moral leadership. America is back."

Biden's designated foreign minister, Anthony Blinken, said his emerging team, which includes women and minorities in key positions, "looks like America."

The Senate will discuss his appointment on Tuesday, the eve of the change of government.

"When America is at its best it still has more capacity than any other country in the world to mobilize others to meet today's challenges," said Blinken, who was also a member of the Obama administration.

The optimism expressed in the new administration comes as the West looks with concern at the United States 'position in the world, following Trump supporters' onslaught on the Capitol earlier this month.

In the last days of the outgoing administration, Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo returned Cuba to the list of countries that support terrorism and defined the pro-Iranian Houthis in Yemen as a terrorist organization.

Under the current Republican administration, the United States has pursued an policy of aggression against Iran and China, sided with Israel and toyed with the idea of improving relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while at the same time imposing further sanctions on Moscow.

Sherman's appointment is another sign that Biden wants to return to the nuclear deal with Iran, from which Trump withdrew in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on it.

Since then, Tehran has stopped fulfilling its commitments, and has accelerated the development of its nuclear program.
