New Hope Chairman Gideon Saar said today (Sunday) that there will be no change in the status quo regarding the marriage and divorce of the LGBT community in the government he heads as "the issue is very heavy".

In an interview with Network B today (Sunday), he explained that "I will not easily give an undertaking that I will not be able to stand behind."

Saar was criticized by political opponents, and was forced to issue a statement on behalf of his party.

Meretz chairman MK Nitzan Horowitz attacked Saar, writing that he "advocates maintaining the Orthodox monopoly on our personal lives."

Horowitz noted that "even when Gideon Saar was asked for his personal opinion regarding the LGBT marriage, he refused to say.

He certainly refused to commit to the matter. "He added that" this is always his position, and not only in the matter of the LGBT, but in relation to civil marriage in general. "

Following the attack on him, Saar's party issued a clarification stating that "within the framework of all his state duties, Gideon Saar promoted the rights of the proud community."

The party explained that "as interior minister, he confirmed in a precedent-setting decision that Jews could immigrate to Israel with same-sex couples under the Law of Return. Real change, not slogans."

They added with new hope that "as Minister of Education, he first recognized student volunteering in the 'Proud Youth Organization (Iggy)' and thus compared his status to that of other youth movements. The Minister of Education also decided that the International Day to Combat Homophobia will mark appropriate educational activities."

"Some are scattering unfulfilled promises - and some have made actual changes many times for the sake of the proud community," the party clarified.

A new government of hope will work for the rights of the LGBT community, in deeds, as part of a liberal worldview.

Not as a tool for making political profits. "
