A total of 40 people tested positive for Covid-19 at the Franziskuswerk Schönbrunn.

An employee had carried the virus into the house.

Schönbrunn

- In the Franziskuswerk Schönbrunn, those responsible are currently fighting against a massive corona outbreak.

According to company spokesman Matthias Haack, 29 residents and eleven employees in the facility for the disabled are infected with the virus.

The good news: According to Haack, the infected people are doing well, "Fortunately we only have mild courses".

The virus was brought into the facility through a facility employee in the first week of January.

Since the employee was deployed in an area of the facility where there are no single rooms, the spread within the residential group could not be prevented.

"The numbers have been rising steadily for days," admits Haack.

Unlike in spring, however, when a significant outbreak with around 100 infected people was also found in the facility during the first corona wave, this time living groups with comparatively young residents are affected: "In terms of age, we have 40 plus people there," says Haack.

These residents would have put up with the infection much better than the sick in April, when the virus broke out in the elderly care station and caused some serious illnesses.

After all, the facility owes this corona outbreak in spring "that we now have a certain immunity among the elderly," said Haack.

The currently infected residents are housed in the quarantine station of the Franziskuswerk, the employees isolate themselves at home.

The facility compensates for the resulting hole in the staffing level through internal restructuring: "Since the infected residents are currently unable to go to the workshop and the funding facility, we are now sending the staff from there to the residential groups," says Haack.

Basically, however, the Franziskuswerk has long been practiced in juggling with scarce staff resources, because: "We always have a shortage of staff."

Even if there is practically no 100 percent security against such corona outbreaks in institutions like the Franziskuswerk, those responsible try to at least keep the risk as low as possible.

In addition to vaccinations - most recently over 200 very old residents and their caregivers have already been vaccinated - a strict test regime also applies, for which the Franziskuswerk has even set up its own test station.

According to spokesman Haack, the facilities can run up to 3,000 tests a week.

“Employees in the supervisory area”, as Haack calls it, have had to take tests twice a week since December.

Visitors who are only allowed in after registering must also take a quick test before entering the house.

For many of the residents of the facility for the disabled, the situation is currently very stressful, as Haack emphasizes.

Because clearly there are those who are looked after who can understand the measures and who would adhere to the quarantine, hygiene and distance rules accordingly.

But then there are also the residents who would not understand and who make a corona outbreak so difficult to control.

After all, according to Haack, “we can't just lock these people up”.
