Separatism: a corseted examination in the Assembly

Almost 300 amendments - from both the majority and the opposition - were ruled out of order before consideration of the bill began.

Nearly 300 amendments - including those by LREM deputies Aurore Bergé and Jean-Baptiste Moreau aimed at prohibiting the wearing of the veil by minors - were deemed inadmissible by François de Rugy, the chairman of the special committee responsible for examining the draft law on respect for republican principles.

"A law is not without limit,"

says the former minister who has passed

"with a fine comb"

the 1800 amendments tabled, before the start of examination of the text in committee, Monday evening.

A relief for the executives of the majority who fear that this sensitive text is swallowed up by controversial debates.

"The issue is separatism which tends to become institutionalized, not private life"
