Why is teamwork so important in computer science studies? Do you have to do a master’s degree? And how does the transition from studying to work work? Computer scientist Julian Pfeifer explains his subject.

In an increasingly networked and digitized world, the work of computer scientists is gaining in importance.

You develop software, operate and evaluate it.

But they don't just work as programmers.

Computer scientists also weigh up how their technologies are best used, how they are most useful for users or how their data can be protected.

Does IT suit me?

The self-test of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology helps.

Julian Pfeifer is 24 years old and studied computer science at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, and has been working as an IT Operations application manager at Deutsche Bahn for almost a year.

Here he explains what he values about computer science, which modules he had difficulties with during his studies and what he learned from his internship.

The decision to study computer science

"I also like to program a night or two to find the perfect solution."

»My passion for IT started very early; I got my first PC when I was eight.

In upper school I switched to a vocational high school that offered the branch of data processing technology - there my interest solidified.

I got to know a lot of the basics, such as programming, databases and web servers, and I also enjoyed programming a night or two to find the perfect solution.

I just enjoyed it, so the decision to study computer science was an easy one for me. "

Content and structure of the course

"I have to admit that the math courses were a bit difficult for me"

“The first semester passed very quickly.

As soon as the first weeks of lectures were over, the exam phase was just around the corner.

At the time, the learning curve seemed very high to me: Algebra, analysis, theoretical computer science, algorithms and data structures - to name just a few modules.

From today's perspective, however, I would say that it was entirely appropriate, you just need these basics.

But I also have to admit that the math courses such as discrete mathematics or statistics were a bit difficult for me.

It's pretty abstract.

I liked the programming projects a lot better because you solve problems together with others.

In a team with fellow students, mistakes are noticed more quickly, but you also find new ways of thinking and solving problems. "

"As a computer scientist you have good prospects even with a bachelor's degree, IT staff is in great demand."

»For me, practical experience was an important part of my studies.

I did my compulsory internship at Deutsche Telekom and later I wrote my bachelor thesis there.

Working on 'living systems' in a large company is a completely different challenge, as they are used by thousands of people every day.

I also found out that I enjoy working in large companies.

I find it exciting to see how many people contribute to making a mammoth project a success.

You also have the chance to work in international teams there, which was also a new experience for me. "

Career prospects after graduation

"As a computer scientist you have good prospects even with a bachelor's degree, IT staff is in great demand."

»Because I liked my internship so much, I decided to start my professional life straight away after finishing my bachelor thesis.

As a computer scientist, you have good prospects even with a bachelor's degree, IT staff is in great demand.

I can also do my master’s degree later, also part-time.

Among other things, I applied to Deutsche Bahn, my preferred employer, and got a job there pretty quickly.

Now I'm responsible for the ticket sales platform, a very complex system.

I like developing something that is important to the end customer.

However, I already miss the freedom of studying.

Fortunately, I can work flexibly and mobile with my current employer. "
