Mafia in Italy: Battle for Rome

Usurious interest rates, money laundering, business takeovers: Cosa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta and Camorra are investing specifically in Rome's historic center during the corona crisis. A SPIEGEL team spoke to investigators and victims.

The Carabinieri came at dawn.

The first rays of sun peeked out between the churches and palaces in the center of Rome, innkeepers put their tables in front of the door.

It was supposed to be a beautiful late summer day, this September 29th last year, when police sirens suddenly broke the silence.

From the gates of the Vatican to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, emergency services searched historical buildings.

In the end, they confiscated several million euros and handcuffed the mafia straw men.

14 restaurants were sealed between Castel Sant'Angelo and Trevi Fountain.

The investigators alleged that they were all administered by the Camorra.

Italy's capital has been in a state of emergency for nine months.

The citizens have exhausted curfews for months.

Retailers suffer as consumption collapses, innkeepers and hoteliers struggle to survive.

240,000 companies across the country gave up last year because of the pandemic.
