Two years ago, the volunteers of the Wörthsee water rescue service and the BRK failed with an initial plan for the construction of a new water rescue station in Steinebach.

In the building committee meeting next Monday, it is now about a stripped down version.

Steinebach - The water watch station in Oberndorf am Wörthsee has been closed since autumn 2017 due to dilapidation.

The around 40-year-old guard house in Steinebach, however, is too small, damp, cannot be heated and is no longer designed for the demands of the rescue workers.

"We have been dealing with the topic for four years," says Wörthsee's Vice Mayor Josef Kraus, who is also the commander of the Steinebach-Auing fire brigade and who presented the project to the press together with Mayor Christel Muggenthal.

They searched forever for a location because the approximately 600 square meter property across from the town hall in Steinebach seemed too narrow.

“But the Rossschwemme is difficult to reach in summer, it is also too narrow on Maistraße, and there is too much activity on Birkenweg,” explained Muggenthal.

Therefore one ended up back at the current location.

In its new planning, the BRK envisages a building with 128 square meters of floor space, eight meters wide, 16 meters long and 6.80 meters high.

On the ground floor there is a cupboard and a medical room, two boat berths next to each other.

A 50 square meter group room is planned on the upper floor.

There has always been a lot of discussion, especially about the two boat berths.

Currently one of the two boats is on the buoy and the other is in the hut.

Critics think it could stay that way.

“But it doesn't make sense.

Because nowadays boats and equipment always have to be ready for use and the devices have to be charged, ”explained Kraus.

Fetching a boat from the buoy or laying the boats one behind the other and then exchanging them depending on the use takes too much time.

The number of boats is also non-negotiable.

"It is measured by the number of missions and what's going on with us in the summer."

The group room was also discussed.

“There is an opinion that it could be somewhere else.

But when it comes to training devices for use, you should have them to hand, ”says Kraus.

The current location in Steinebach is controversial among some citizens because of its location.

They fear for their public bathing place.

But she can reassure Muggenthal.

The new planning provides for a long jetty that can be used by bathers.

In addition, the community is currently negotiating with a neighbor and the owner of the Wörthsee, Count Cajetan zu Toerring-Jettenbach, about a smaller widening of the property so that the bathers have enough space.

According to Kraus and Muggenthal, expanding the old guard station in Oberndorf is no longer up for debate.

The hut has been closed since 2017.

An expansion would have meant too great an encroachment on the reed belt of the Wörthsee at this point.

“That would not be feasible in the nature reserve”, estimates Muggenthal.

Oberndorf can be reached from Steinebach by lifeboat in a maximum of six minutes, which is quick enough.

Around 40 active people are currently involved in the Wörthsee water rescue service, plus 50 young members.

Muggenthal estimates the cost of the new building at around 600,000 euros.

The district is contributing around 350,000 euros, with the neighboring communities, the BRK and the Free State on board.

For Muggenthal and Kraus, the sustainability of the solution is paramount.

“It has to be sustainable, and it is.” Nevertheless, Muggenthal does not expect a unanimous decision on Monday.

"But I'm definitely for it."
