Maria Streibl and Andreas Sedlmeier research their family history - and thus also the history of Dorfen.

Dorfen

- family research is trendy.

Maria Streibl and Andreas Sedlmeier have been scouring the Internet for common ancestors for years.

The two hobby genealogists from Dorfen are supported by local historian Franz Streibl, Maria Streibl's father.

The fact that the people of Dorfen come across a lot of local color makes the search all the more exciting.

“I'm curious about what it was like in the past, what people experienced and how they lived,” says Andreas Sedlmeier, who works in the administration and in the elementary school daycare at Child Protection Munich: “In Unterhausmehring, where I come from, there used to be a weaving mill. ”The first entry in the church register was dated 1620.

“These are my direct ancestors,” Sedlmeier found out.

“A bakery and the Niedermühle in Dorfen also belonged to the workshop,” he says.

He also finds his family relationships fascinating, which also only became apparent through genealogical research.

“Maria and I are second cousins.

Agnes and Franz Streibl are therefore my great-aunt and my great-uncle. ”The two relatives Andreas Sedlmeier and Maria Streibl have genealogy in their blood - together they have been searching for the past four years.

Maria Streibl was infected with the history virus from her father as a child.

Franz Streibl is a member of the board of directors of the historical district of Dorfen and a cultural award winner.

In the meantime, however, she is mainly concentrating on the family tree of her own family, says the educator and married mother.

"It's like a puzzle - you never get finished, you always find a new piece," she explains her fascination with genealogy.

The journey is the goal, says Maria Streibl.

The two hobby historians do research on the Internet - in their free time, mostly on Sundays.

“In the past, genealogy was much more difficult,” says Maria Streibl.

“You had to go to the archive, fish for information on microfilms.” Now platforms such as “MyHeritage” or “Ancestry” make the search for distant family branches much easier.

It is possible that this is why more and more people are interested in their ancestors, says Sedlmeier.

“I came across a descendant of our family from the Rosenheim branch.

We have already met, we work well with him, ”said Unterhausmehringer.

Of course, there are also many references to the family history of the Streibl clan in the work of Pastor Josef Gammel, probably the most important local researcher in the Dorfen area.

His book, which was devoted to local and home history as well as religious life in Dorfen, is one of the most important sources for hobby historian Maria Streibl.

Countless colored notes mark the places in which the pastor mentioned the Streibl family.

“We have a big head start thanks to Gammel's preparatory work,” she explains.

Finally, their father can also add to the family chronicle: "The Streibls originally come from Passau, then married into the Gaigl family in Dorfen." This is how a dynasty emerged that wrote local history for centuries, explains Franz Streibl.

"By marrying - among other things into respected brewery owner families - the family was later spread all over Upper Bavaria", adds daughter Maria.

The Streibls are part of Dorfen's history.

“My grandfather Max Streibl was a founding member of the Dorfen fire brigade,” says Franz Streibl.

Even the old town hall in Dorfen, in which the mayors of Dorfen have carried out their official business since 1860, goes back indirectly to the Streibls.

The builder Johann Baptist Gerbl was married to a Streibl daughter.
