Broadband expansion in Schongau: peripheral districts in the fast lane

On paper, Schongau is comparatively well positioned in terms of fire tape supply. But not all that glitters is gold, confirms the city's broadband sponsor. After all: 95 percent of households can surf the Internet quickly, use streaming services and work online from the home office. On paper, Schongau is comparatively well positioned in terms of fire tape supply.

But not all that glitters is gold, confirms the city's broadband sponsor.

After all: 95 percent of households can surf the Internet quickly, use streaming services and work online from the home office.

For so far disadvantaged outlying districts, things will soon even go into the fast lane.

Schongau - fiber optic connections are still the ultimate in broadband coverage.

Especially when they are moved into the house, the residents never have to worry about slow downloads or jerky films again.

Telekom supplies new development area with FTTH connections

Deutsche Telekom reported these days that it will supply eleven properties in the “Schönlinderstraße II” development area with so-called FTTH connections.

Customers can then book up to 1000 Mbit per second there.

That is more than enough.

According to Telekom, these are the first connections of this type that the company in Schongau is offering private households.

The city will also offer poorly supplied households with fiber optics right into their homes

But it won't stop there.

The city of Schongau would like to supply several peripheral areas that had previously looked into the tube for broadband connections with the same super-fast connections.

In the next four years, the affected households will “go from zero to a hundred”, confirms broadband sponsor Martin Blockhaus, who is responsible for civil engineering in the building authority.

According to his statements, the city council decided last year to supply the “white spots” with fiber optics.

A total of 50 households on Altenstadter Strasse, Am Eichfeld, Am Hohen Graben, Dornau, Lechuferstrasse, Römerstrasse and Staffelau even get the connections right into the houses.

The Free State bears 70 percent of the costs

And this is new: in the past, residents were asked to pay around 800 euros for laying fiber optics in the house.

According to Blockhaus, this meant that many did not want to participate and the fiber optic cables were lying unused in the floor.

That is why the Schongau residents concerned are now getting the connections for free.

The city can get over it thanks to the support of the Free State.

He takes on 70 percent of the investment sum, which is a good one million euros.

The city only needs to shell out 300,000 euros to close its broadband gap.

Broadband sponsor thinks Schongau is overall "great" when it comes to Internet coverage

Most of the city, on the other hand, will have to be content with what it has in the future.

In the opinion of the broadband patent, the citizens are not poorly supplied.

Schongau is overall "great", he thinks and recalls the various measures that have already been tackled in the past.

In the gigabit area, the city still has some catching up to do

Nevertheless, compared to the district town, Schongau is still a few Mbit behind.

As can be seen from the broadband atlas of the Federal Ministry of Transport, 86 percent of households in Weilheim currently have the option of getting 1000 Mbit / s into their homes.

In Schongau it is just two percent.

After all, Lechstadt is more broadly positioned in the lower range: from an availability of 200 Mbit / s it even does slightly better with 92 percent (Weilheim: 90 percent).

Stale aftertaste with the cable network

This is probably due to the fact that Schongau has an extensive cable network through which a number of citizens not only receive their television but are also connected to the Internet.

According to the broadband atlas, 90 percent of them achieve transmission rates of up to 200 Mbit / s.

However, much more is often advertised.

And broadband godfather Blockhaus knows that this volume of data only rarely comes out of the line.

He speaks of a "stale aftertaste" and recommends Schongauers to compare the providers.

Homework is done for now

With the expansion that has now been decided, the city has done its homework for now.

The Schongau residents will have to wait a while for the areas in which cable or conventional DSL lines are already in the ground to be improved with fiber optics.

This could be made possible by the state's new funding program, which covers 80 percent of the costs up to a maximum of six million euros;

the so-called "Bavarian Gigabit Directive".

As reported, a market survey has already been signed in Peiting.
