Hope for Vaterstetten: The community builds a fiber optic network

The large community of Vaterstetten is to get a comprehensive fiber optic network.

If everything goes well, construction work could start as early as 2022, as Mayor Leonhard Spitzauer (CSU) emphasizes. "But a number of questions still need to be clarified," he told EZ.

Estimated cost: around 25 million euros.

The municipality expects government subsidies of around 80 percent.

That left a share of five million euros for the community.

Start of construction possible in 2022

There was a clear majority in favor of the procedure.

Only the SPD reported concerns.

She sees risks, as group spokesman Sepp Mittermeier said.

No municipality in the district has yet implemented this model.

The comrades rely on a “coverage gap model” in which state subsidies are passed on to the executing company.

The company carries the remaining deficit alone.

The comrades were not successful with this.

SPD has concerns

The SPD also failed with another attempt.

It should be stipulated that existing fiber optic networks are not built over.

According to the comrades, that would be a “completely unnecessary waste of money and resources”.

However, the SPD proposal was rejected by the majority.

"That would be a restriction on the community," said CSU parliamentary group spokesman Michael Niebler.

The municipality has some catching up to do

However, the committee agreed that the expansion of fiber optics in the municipality is absolutely necessary.

Because especially in the largest municipality in the district there is still considerable need.

"Since Corona at the latest, we have recognized that we have to take action," said the mayor.

"And I do not think that we will no longer need the fiber optics when Corona is over."

However, the municipal council will keep a close eye on the town hall during this project.

At the request of Klaus Willenberg (FDP), it was included in the resolution that the committee should be regularly informed about the progress of the project.

The list of services for network operation must be submitted to the municipal council for a decision before the invitation to tender.
