In Scotland at this time of year we celebrate Burns Night.
Rabbie Burns (1759-1796) is our greatest poet, a man who translated his immense passion for life into verse of incomparable wit and poetry.
Usually - but unfortunately not this year - we get together to dine around a haggis, drink whiskey, and recite his work.
It's also a celebration of what it means to be Scottish.
I therefore invite you to raise your glass this evening to honor our greatest poet, but also to toast the lasting bonds of friendship between Scotland and the countries of the European Union (EU).
The detailed UK-EU agreement on Christmas Eve covers trade, but also sets out modalities for ongoing cooperation in security, transport, energy, social security and care.
