Covid in Latin America: this is how the week begins in the most affected countries

Thus begins the week of January 25 in the 10 countries in the region with the highest number of deaths from covid-19.

-While some governments are already vaccinating against the coronavirus, other Latin American countries wait for their leaders to launch vaccination schedules and thus face a pandemic that has already claimed more than 2.1 millions of lives in the world.

The countries most affected in the world by the virus are the United States, Brazil and India, with more than 419,000, 217,000 and 153,000 deaths, respectively.

Thus begins the week of January 25, 2021 in the ten Latin American countries with the highest number of deaths from covid-19, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

This Sunday, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on his verified Twitter account that he tested positive for covid-19.

He stated that his symptoms are mild and that he is receiving medical treatment.

The president rarely wears a mask and has been criticized for his handling of the pandemic.

Currently, Mexico is the fourth country with the most deaths from covid-19 in the world, after the United States, Brazil and India.

Colombia surpassed the grim milestone of more than two million coronavirus cases at the end of last week.

Despite the fact that the National Institute of Food and Drug Surveillance of Colombia (Invima) authorized on January 5 the emergency use of the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, the government has not yet reported the exact date of the start of immunization.

The Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo García, remains hospitalized in intensive care and "continues with ventilatory support and antibiotic coverage", although it has evolved in a "favorable" way, according to the Presidency this Sunday in a statement.

Trujillo was diagnosed with "SARS-CoV-2 viral pneumonia."
