Thousands of German seniors have received online error messages from various vaccine centers, while technical problems have damaged the start of the corona vaccination campaign in the country's most populous province, North Rhine-Westphalia, which has a population of almost 18 million - larger than many European countries.

The vaccination campaign began there with injections to nursing home residents and medical staff last month, along with the rest of the state.

But people over the age of 80 who still live in their homes have been told they will have to wait until February 8 to get their first shots, while the huge pre-Christmas vaccination centers still stand empty.

"Due to the increased demand, it is currently not possible to make an appointment for a vaccine," many users who tried to access the Regional Physicians' Association website, which organizes the immune system, were told.

Attempts to book an appointment over the phone were also useless, as many of the 1.2 million people over the age of 80 or their children had already flooded the hotlines.

The technical problems have been an embarrassment for Gov. Armin Lasht, who was recently elected new Chancellor Angela Merkel's new party leader, making him a possible contender to succeed her this fall.

Lasht insisted that the start of the vaccination campaign was a success.

"Tens of thousands got queues today, but one thing is clear: if a million people get notified and then call the hotline, there could be a large load and technical issues could arise," he said, suggesting people continue to try in the near future.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is an industrial power in which cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund are located.

It leads in many of the vaccines per capita vaccine in Germany, with about 1.6% of the country's population already receiving the first shot.

Across Germany, less than 1.6 million people, or about 1.9 percent of the country's population, received their first shot by Sunday - a much lower rate than in Israel, the United Kingdom or the United States.

228,763 humans received the second dose of the vaccine.

Since the outbreak, more than 2.1 million corona cases and more than 52,000 deaths have been diagnosed in Germany.

The country has so far received about 3.5 million vaccine doses, which raises questions as to why only half has been used so far.

The federal government in Germany has sought to distance itself from problems in launching the vaccination campaign.

"The call centers are run by the states, not by the federal government," Health Ministry spokesman Hano Coutz told reporters in Berlin.

An organization campaigning for the rights of patients in Germany said the failure of people to make vaccination appointments could be frustrating in the country.

"It will severely hurt the willingness to get vaccinated," said the organization's chairman, Eugen Brish.

I am actually pleased with the opening of the vaccination campaign.

The staff of the North Rhine-Westphalia hospital, which borders Belgium and the Netherlands, has already complained that despite the fight on the front line of the epidemic, they have not been offered the doses of unused vaccines, with people in nursing homes refusing the vaccine.

Instead, some of the remaining shots were intended for people who were not eligible to be vaccinated, including local officials and journalists, which led to accusations of arranging appointments for associates and corruption.

Brush said deviating from the priority list should become a criminal offense, as in other states.
