Evil tongues had already suggested during Donald Trump's tenure as US President that he would rather spend his time in Mar-a-Lago than in Washington.

The fact that Trump himself referred to his property in Florida as the "White House for the winter" reinforced this impression.

The numerous members of the private club paid a lot for the proximity to the president.

But now Trump is out of office - and things are no longer going really well in Mar-a-Lago.

At least that's what the historian and author Laurence Leamer explained to the US broadcaster MSNBC.

Leamer is considered a leading expert on Mar-a-Lago and has even written a book about the property and its illustrious members.

“It's become a sad place.

It is no longer what it used to be, ”said Leamer about the current situation on site.

He spoke to numerous members who had "left without a sound" when Trump lost his re-election.

However, he did not provide exact figures.

The club's problems are also due to the corona crisis, bigger events cannot take place at the moment.

For Trump, falling membership means not only empty chairs, but also empty coffers: After he was sworn in as the 45th president, the admission fee was doubled to $ 200,000.

There were also annual contributions in the five-digit range.

And there is also resentment about Trump in the neighborhood.

In December it became known that numerous residents are resisting the permanent presence of the ex-president.

Accordingly, a lawyer from the neighbors sent a letter to the Secret Service and the city of Palm Beach.

In it they write that Trump has no right to permanently reside in the facility, which is considered a private club.

They refer to regulations from the 1990s.

At that time, Trump converted the property from a private residence to a private club.

It was of little use, Trump has been living in Mar-a-Lago for about a week.

According to Laurence Leamer, however, he shouldn't be prepared for too many invitations to barbecue in the neighborhood.

“Even in Palm Beach, people don't like him.

It's another sign of how much influence he's lost. "
