The Cultural Center in Mezzeh hosted an event for the arts of Arabic calligraphy entitled My Language My Identity for a group of students from Martyr Girls Schools.

The event, which was held in cooperation with the House of Arabic Calligraphy and Arts Society, was said by the plastic artist, Reem Kabtan, the president of the association, in a statement to SANA: “The focus in the workshop, which is held on a monthly basis, is on defining and training the participants on the forms of the Arabic script and the principles of the line of the patch in order to develop their skills in this line” explained The association seeks, in cooperation with the Damascus Culture Directorate, to spread calligraphy arts among young people through a series of workshops in several cultural centers to establish a solid base for the advancement of Arabic calligraphy arts to create a state of interaction and belonging between this calligraphy and the new generations.

In turn, Eng. Lubna Haddad, Director of the Cultural Center in Mezze, explained that the event is part of the Ministry of Culture’s plan to empower the Arabic language and said that we seek to hold similar events on a monthly basis to introduce children and adolescents to the types of Arabic calligraphy because it is a fundamental pillar of our language that establishes belonging to the Arab culture for them.

The engineer, plastic artist and one of the supervisors in the workshop stated that this event is a continuation of a similar activity held at the center with the aim of helping the students to communicate their ideas by writing in the arts of Arabic calligraphy, indicating that the interaction and response of the students were great to learn more of the arts of Arabic calligraphy.

Artist Siham Muhaisen indicated that the focus was on the letter Baa and its connection with the rest of the letters, highlighting the distinction of its shape within the line of the patch, giving examples and practical exercises for each case separately.

It is noteworthy that the House of Arabic Calligraphy and Arts Society is concerned with spreading and developing the arts of calligraphy, decoration and miniature among groups of society, in addition to various other arts, and in partnership and coordination with various official and private cultural institutions and bodies and individuals in order to develop the aesthetic taste in the Syrian society.
