With the refugee crisis, the number of people in detention centers also increased. Since 1993, dozens of people obliged to leave the country have committed suicide while in custody. Many deaths remain unexplained.

Amad Ahmad spends the last weeks of his life in a cell in the Kleve correctional facility.

On July 6, 2018, the 26-year-old Kurd was arrested in Geldern on the Lower Rhine.

Less than three months later, he's dead.

Ahmad was charged with raping a young woman.

It later emerges that the story was made up.

Ahmad is arrested anyway.

He is said to have sexually insulted women, marijuana was found on him and he was caught driving fare dodger several times.

The police cracked down on him - also because Ahmad's personal data was mistakenly confused with that of another wanted person from Mali.

He was wanted for theft, but doesn't look a bit like Ahmad.

The mix-up was noticed just three weeks after Ahmad's arrest, but the Syrian remained in custody.

Ahmad had been behind bars for more than two months when his cell suddenly caught fire.

94 suicides, more than 3000 self-harm

The refugee came to the hospital with severe burns and died on September 29 after a lung transplant.

To this day it is unclear how the fire came about.

A parliamentary investigation committee of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament has been working on the investigation for two years.
