United States on alert for risk of extremist violence

2021-01-28T07:22:31.820Z

The United States government issued, for the first time, an anti-terrorism alert bulletin devoted to the internal threats posed by the

Joe Biden's election to the White House is still not accepted by right-wing extremists in the United States.

After the events on Capitol Hill, on January 6, the judicial authorities announced the indictment of a supporter of Donald Trump, a 43-year-old mechanic, after the discovery in his company of five homemade bombs and fifty weapons that he intended, according to the indictment, to use against Democrats.

He wanted to attack the office of Democratic Governor of California Gavin Newson but also the headquarters of Twitter and Facebook which have banned the former president from their networks.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Internal Security decided to issue for the first time an anti-terrorism alert, even if it assured that this was not motivated by "information on a specific credible plot".

In fact, the ministry more generally reports a "climate of increased threats" present in all the United States and likely to last several weeks.

"Defeat white supremacism and domestic terrorism"

"Reports suggest that violent extremists objecting to the exercise of governmental authority and the presidential transition, as well as other grievances fueled by false stories, may continue to mobilize, and incite to commit crimes. violence ”, explains this bulletin.

The Ministry of Internal Security, which was created after the attacks of September 11, 2001, regularly issues such warnings, but they are usually linked to threats of foreign origin, particularly jihadists.

This is the first time that a warning bulletin has dealt with a threat within the country itself.

This turning point reflects the speech of Joe Biden who, upon his inauguration on January 20, vowed to "defeat white supremacism and domestic terrorism."

"

"I am happy to see that the ministry fully recognizes the threat posed by the violent extreme right" whereas it has been "encouraged over the past four years," said Democrat elected Bennie Thompson who heads the commission of Homeland Security in the House of Representatives.

The consequences of Trump's tenure

Former Republican President Donald Trump has been repeatedly accused of showing complacency towards the radical right, some of which were on the front lines during his supporters' assault on Capitol Hill.

This alert bulletin, which is valid until April 30, notes that these extremists are animated by several motivations, and in particular their "anger at the restrictions linked to Covid-19 and the results of the election" and that they already have plotted in 2020 sometimes attacking official buildings.

With this alert bulletin, the ministry says it is determined to protect “critical infrastructure” and “populations that could be targeted because of their religion, race, origin, identity or political opinion”.

The Pentagon had previously announced that the thousands of National Guard troops deployed for the swearing-in of Joe Biden would remain in Washington until March, following new threats.

At the same time, the judicial authorities have deployed great means to find the perpetrators of the attack on the seat of Congress.

More than 150 people have already been indicted by federal justice, including three members of a far-right militia prosecuted for "conspiracy and sedition".
