Again, thousands of people took to the streets.

Poland tightened its already strict abortion rules and put them into effect on Wednesday.

Even before the adjustment, abortion was only legal in a few cases in Poland: if the life of the mother or child was at risk, if the pregnancy resulted from rape or if the fetus was seriously malformed.

Now, an abortion is also illegal in the case of such a severe malformation.

In a controversial ruling, the country's highest court ruled on this in October.

Many women are angry that the new rules should now be implemented.

Gabriela Stepniak, protester:

»I want us to keep our basic rights, the right to decide about our bodies, the right to decide what we want to do and whether we want to give birth to children and under what circumstances we have children.

I don't want to get pregnant one day and watch my child die after it's born.

I find this thought horrific. "

The demonstrators do not want to give up their fight against the conservative PiS government.

Gabriela Stepniak, protester:

»We have to protest again, that is the only way in which we can prove to those who govern that we are not tired, that we do not have enough, that we do not lack strength and that we are stand together.

Regardless of how old we are, in our twenties or older.

Nobody can impose anything on us, we all want to protest together. "

In Poland there are fewer than 2000 legally performed abortions each year.

However, women's rights organizations estimate that around 200,000 Polish women have illegal abortions or go abroad for it every year.

Marta Lempart, leader of the protests:

»Stop lying that abortions do not take place.

Stop lying like the far right and the church.

Enough is enough.

We demand solidarity from you.

We demand solidarity. "

Women's rights activists fear that the number of illegal abortions or abortions abroad will increase if the ruling of the Supreme Court is implemented.
