China today announced the start of the first nuclear power unit to use the domestically developed third-generation Hualong Wan reactor, paving the way for mass production and export.
"The fifth unit, located in Fucheng City, Fujian Province, in the east of the country, has started its commercial operations and generates electrical energy for sale after seven days of trial operation," the China National Nuclear Energy Corporation confirmed, according to what Xinhua reported.
The company indicated that the modern, locally produced reactor with all its basic components is designed for a life span of up to 60 years and meets the most stringent safety and security standards in the world.
The company’s president, Yue Jianfeng, also confirmed that, thanks to this new reactor, China has become at the forefront of the third generation of nuclear technology in the world, along with countries such as the United States, France and Russia, pointing out that using Hualong Wan will help Beijing achieve low-carbon development goals such as reaching a second emission peak Carbon dioxide before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.
