Just three weeks ago, before the first round of the Turkish elections, Europeans were considering a defeat for Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On May 14, they resigned themselves to continuing five more years with the outgoing president. And it is he they will meet again on Thursday in Chisinau for the second meeting of the European Political Community. European leaders did not fail to congratulate him on Sunday evening while Turkey is an essential interlocutor for the bloc.
The congratulations were, however, accompanied by an invitation to enter into a constructive relationship with the EU, at least more peaceful than it has been in the past decade with a Turkish president exploiting every flaw in the bloc, from migration to the relationship with Russia.
