The Nuremberg Animal Shelter is running out of space and food. That's why it had to impose a stop on admissions and called for food donations – but Amazon doesn't want to deliver.

Nuremberg – Animal shelters take care of animals in a wide variety of cases, for example when they are handed over, when their former owners can no longer take care of them, when they are found on the street or when they come from an illegal animal transport. Unfortunately, even with these institutions, there is a limit to how much the helpers can do and how many animals they can take in. The Nuremberg Animal Shelter has reached this limit. It imposed a stop to admissions and announced that they were running out of food for the animals.

Criticism of politics and illegal puppy transports: Nuremberg animal shelter no longer has a place

There are currently 55 dogs and more than 130 cats in the Nuremberg Animal Shelter. Tanja Schnabel, head of the Nuremberg animal shelter, tells BR24 that they have reached their limit in terms of space, finances and personnel. No more found animals can be taken in by her and her team and pets can be handed over. The Nuremberg Animal Shelter maintains a waiting list for dog owners who want to give up their dogs. However, the submission cannot take place immediately - the waiting period is about one and a half years.

Another problem for the Nuremberg Animal Shelter is dogs with behavioral problems. These animals are difficult or, in the worst case, impossible to place. That's why they take up a place in the shelter for a very long time, explains Schnabel BR24. The shelter manager criticized the policy. According to Schnabel, the responsible politicians are to blame, among other things, for the collapse of the animal shelters.

According to the shelter manager, politicians have looked the other way for too long. Animal welfare associations and animal shelters are demanding, among other things, a curb on illegal puppy transports, reports BR24. The dogs eventually end up at the shelter. Only recently, the shelter had to take in a found animal again. Police officers found a dog tied to a fence and immediately took her to the shelter.

Shelter runs out of food: Amazon does not ship "dangerous goods"

In addition to space and money, the Nuremberg Animal Shelter is also running out of food. The helpers have "just as many animals in the house as they haven't been for a long time and it doesn't stop," write those responsible on Facebook. "We are in urgent need of support." To make it easier for interested parties to help the animals and caregivers, the Nuremberg Animal Shelter created a wish list on Amazon, but there were problems.

The food could not be delivered to the address of the shelter. Only a call to Amazon provided information about why the Nuremberg animal shelter could not receive the food. According to Amazon, there are delivery restrictions for the desired items. The shelter posted a message from Amazon on Facebook explaining the delivery restrictions. The items include "flammable, pressurized, corrosive, hazardous to the environment, or otherwise harmful substances." These products are "classified as dangerous goods by air in accordance with the European Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Air," the company's message shows.

"We are a bit speechless right now," writes the Nuremberg animal shelter on Facebook. The helpers did not miss the opportunity to make a joke about the situation. "Is the dog and cat food flammable or hazardous to the environment? Why can't it be shipped by land if it's classified as dangerous goods by air? Questions upon questions," she says at the end of her post. Since Amazon couldn't help them, they posted a list of pet food products they need and supporters can donate to them.
