Highlights: The exterior façade and the roof truss of St. Anne's Church in Karlsfeld were extensively renovated twelve years ago. Now it's the turn of the interior. Church curator Alfred Latztl does not know whether they will be able to make up for the delays by the end of the year. Latzl estimates the total cost of the restoration at around 30,000 euros. In no other Bavarian diocese is a baptismal font known in the ground so unique.

Actually, the faithful from Karlsfeld should be able to celebrate services again in St. Anne's Church on Krenmoosstraße for the new church year in December. But in all likelihood, nothing will come of it.

Karlsfeld – . "We are behind schedule with the construction work," explains church curator Alfred Latztl. The 67-year-old does not know whether they will be able to make up for the delays by the end of the year. There were some surprises during the construction work. When the floor was torn out, heating pipes appeared under the wooden platforms on which the benches stood. "They shouldn't have been there. We then had to re-lay all of it," says Latzl.

There were also problems with the new baptismal font. The oval stone basin, which is embedded up to 80 centimeters in the ground, had to be extended. "It took us two to three weeks."

The baptismal font will reportedly be one of the highlights of the renovations inside St. Anne's Church when they are finished. The spectacle of people being baptized there will be unique in Bavaria. In no other Bavarian diocese is a baptismal font known in the ground.

In the meantime, the improved baptismal font in St. Anna has been installed, all electrical cables have been laid and concrete slabs and natural stone have been removed.

The concept of the new St. Anne's Church will not change, says Latzl. At the beginning of the year, together with the former church curator Robert Ludwig, he presented to the local newspaper what the faithful Karlsfeld residents can look forward to in St. Anne's Church after the renovation.

In order to absorb the rising construction costs, Latzl and his parish team have to save money at every turn, says the church caretaker.

For example, the parish of St. Anna has taken over the laying of the electrical cables itself. Latzl and his Tam also want to take care of the painting work themselves. "I think we're doing a good job."

Latzl also counts on many supporters who are happy to donate. Especially in the restoration of the relics. The Madonna is worm-eaten, the paint is peeling off. The tabernacle and the body of Christ also need to be renewed. Latzl estimates the total cost of the restoration at around 30,000 euros.

He has already asked the Ordinariate for support in art restoration, but an answer is still pending. In total, the parish has to bear 60 percent of the total construction costs itself. Six months ago, Latzl was still assuming total costs of around 860,000 euros. Latzl no longer believes that it will stay that way.

At the moment, the construction site in St. Anne's Church is at rest. Craftsmen's holidays. It is scheduled to continue in September. "In two months," Latzl hopes, "you'll see a lot inside."
