Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara responded Thursday to the harsh letter addressed to her last night by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, in which he claimed that he does not receive legal advice in a petition submitted to the High Court of Justice against the non-convening of the Judicial Selection Committee.
"Your statements regarding the individual case and the role of attorney general in general do not correspond to the facts," she said. "A mistaken impression has been created that the attorney general does not regularly and substantively promote government policy; things are quite the opposite."
She added, "The professional duty of the Attorney General's Office is to warn the government of unlawful moves. This is the meaning of gatekeeping, this is the role of the attorney general in Israel."

Later, she contradicted Levin's claim that she was not present with him in the discussion about the petition. "In your letter you raised various claims about how the petitions were handled. The letter was sent to me while we were discussing the petitions, and while we were waiting to receive your response to the draft response to the petitions. I would like to set things straight."

"Baseless accusations and threats of dismissal will not deter me"
Miara further confirmed the publication in Walla! According to him, she intended to write to the High Court of Justice that the committee for the selection of judges should be convened at least for the appointment of judges in lower courts that do not include the Supreme Court, and that she would insert the different position of a minister who opposes convening the committee in any case in a separate paragraph in her own position. "You have made it clear that you do not seek to be represented by an outside lawyer in these petitions," Miara argued. "It was agreed at your request that your position be represented in the response alongside my different position, and this was done. Baseless accusations that the current government is being treated differently than the previous one, as well as threats of dismissal, will not deter me."
