Highlights: Rachida Dati appointed Minister of Culture in Gabriel Attal's government. François Baroin, president of the Republicans of Aube, lashes out at the ex-LR. Baroin: "The mermaids are on the rock. They tell you: "Look how beautiful I am, come on!" It's to better drag you into the depths and kill you. To those who accept the Titanic and the siren song, I say "good luck". And I'd also be tempted to say, "fair winds"..."

The president of the Republicans of Aube vehemently attacked the ex-LR, now converted to Macronism, during his New Year's Eve address on Friday 11 January.

Nicolas Sarkozy's Minister of Justice between 2007 and 2009, who has become an emblematic figure of the Parisian right, Rachida Dati took up her post in Gabriel Attal's brand new government on Thursday, at the Ministry of Culture. Macron's war grab did not fail to provoke a reaction from his former political family even in Aube, where François Baroin was pronouncing strong vows on Friday, as reported by L'Est Éclair.

The mayor of Troyes opened the criticism by directly attacking the new tenant of Matignon, Gabriel Attal: "The prime minister has spent half his life as an activist. He's an apparatchik. He's never done anything but a poloch." But the attacks on her former LR comrade were not long in coming: "I've known her for a long time. Mayor of Paris is a distant prospect for her. It's always surprising to see people boarding the Titanic with a smile on their faces, especially when you know the end of the story. We think she lacks lucidity. Does she really believe that the cruise will be pretty and sunny? Macronia is going to explode.

Mocking Rachida Dati's sudden change of foot, the former Sarkozy minister continued the offensive: "With this siren song, there is always the possibility of catching frogs that have jumped from the wheelbarrow. (...) The mermaids are on the rock. They tell you: "Look how beautiful I am, come on!" It's to better drag you into the depths and kill you. To those who accept the Titanic and the siren song, I say "good luck". And I'd also be tempted to say, "fair winds"...

The mayor, who claims to be a right-wing "of conviction", took the opportunity to renew his loyalty to the Republicans: "If I had wanted to be part of this cohort of frogs who jumped from the wheelbarrow and abandoned us, I would have done so on many occasions. But that's impossible for me. These are not my values, not my conception of the country. The proposed methods and remedies are not good.

On X (formerly Twitter), Éric Ciotti was keen to lend his support to François Baroin's speech. "Nothing to add," he wrote, tersely. At the end of the afternoon on Thursday, the LR leader was informed by Rachida Dati of his appointment, a few hours before the official announcement of the composition of the government. As soon as she joined the government, Éric Ciotti announced her expulsion from the party in a post on X: "She places herself outside our political family. She is no longer a Republican. We are in the opposition, so we draw the consequences of his choice with regret.
