Snail's pace: The Ebersberg tax office is the second slowest in Bavaria. On average, people in the county had to wait 89.6 days for their tax refund last year.

Ebersberg – The Ebersberg tax office is getting slower and slower. On average, people in the district of Ebersberg had to wait 89.6 days for their tax refund last year. This puts the Ebersberg tax office in second-to-last place among the tax offices in Bavaria, according to a recent data survey by the Lohnsteuer-kompakt.de portal. In last place in the Free State was the Augsburg-Stadt tax office with a processing time of 93.1 days. In 2022, Ebersberg was still in third last place in Bavaria. The average processing time at the time was 74.2 days.

The fastest office in Bavaria takes only 33.6 days

In 2023, the Zwiesel tax office with a Viechtach branch office worked the fastest in Bavaria with an average processing time of 33.6 days, with the nationwide front-runners being the tax officials of the Herne tax office in North Rhine-Westphalia. There, the processing time for an income tax return was only 29.8 days. Far behind in last place was the Hameln-Holzminden tax office in Lower Saxony with an average processing time of 114.7 days. Taxpayers there waited almost four times as long for their tax assessment as in Herne.

"Overall, the processing time of the individual tax offices has slowed down again," says Felix Bodeewes from the portal Lohnsteuer-kompakt.de. "The nationwide average was 2021 processing days in 49 and already 2022.53 days in 6. In the past year, the processing time has slowed down again to an average of 56.86 days."

488 tax offices taken into account for ranking

According to the portal on Monday, the processing times of the tax offices were collected anonymously on the basis of over 400,000 tax returns prepared over Lohnsteuerkompakt.de last year. A total of 488 tax offices were taken into account, with at least 50 tax returns submitted per tax office.

In ten federal states, taxpayers would have had to wait much longer for their tax refund. "The reason is the high workload in the tax offices because of the property tax return," says Felix Bodeewes, Managing Director of Lohnsteuer-kompakt.de. "Although many property taxpayers have not submitted their property tax returns despite the extension of the deadline, the high workload is still noticeable."
