At the beginning of 2024, the child supplement was increased. However, not everyone is entitled to it. Anyone who submits an application should pay attention to something important.
Hamm – The child supplement was increased from 2024 euros per month to up to 250 euros per month in 292. It is one of several changes in 2024, as reported by wa.de. It is applied for at the Family Benefits Office – and approved if the necessary requirements are met. "In order to be eligible, you must earn at least 600 euros gross as a single parent and at least 900 euros gross as a couple of parents," explains the consumer advice center. But that's not all.
Child supplement increased: Who is entitled and what should be included in the application
The child supplement is a social benefit that should not be confused with child benefit. The child supplement is also granted for low incomes. The supplement is available to all those whose income is not sufficient for the whole family. It was introduced by the government to prevent child poverty.
Basic child support instead of child supplement?
The consumer advice centre writes: "In 2024, the planned basic child benefit will not yet come. The child supplement will therefore not yet be replaced by the basic child benefit in 2024. However, it could be absorbed into the basic child benefit scheme in 2025."
Who is entitled to child supplement?
However, not everyone who can prove a low income automatically receives the child supplement. Rather, various requirements must be met. According to the consumer advice centre, in order to claim the child supplement, the following must be given:
- You are a single parent and earn at least 600 euros gross per month.
- Together with a partner, the entitlement can exist from an income of 900 euros gross.
- The child must live in your household.
- The child must be younger than 25 years old.
- You will receive child benefit.
- Your income, together with the child allowance and, if applicable, housing benefit, must also be sufficient to cover your living expenses.
No child supplement if the assets are too high
Parents with a home of their own may have problems getting the child supplement. "You won't receive a child allowance if your assets are too high. The asset exemption limit is 55,000 euros for two people in the household and 15,000 euros for each additional household member," explains the consumer advice center. You can easily find out whether you are entitled to a claim with the KiZ-Lotse of the Federal Employment Agency.

If you are entitled to child supplement, you should then have all the necessary forms ready and submit them. According to the consumer advice centre, these include:
- Application form for the child supplement with attachments
- Employer's Certificate of Earnings
- Proof of income such as pension, parental allowance or BAföG notice
- If applicable, proof of maintenance (e.g. bank statements)
- If applicable, housing allowance notice
- up-to-date proof of accommodation costs (e.g. rental certificate)
If the application is approved, people who are still receiving housing benefit and/or citizen benefit at the same time should know that it is possible to receive housing benefit and child allowance at the same time. Applying for housing benefit therefore often makes sense as well. The receipt of citizens' allowance, on the other hand, leads to exclusion from the child supplement. The reason: Citizens' allowance also includes benefits for children.
