Young exchange students who suddenly disappear: This is not an isolated case in Australia these days. Is there a connection between the cases?

Adelaide – For the fifth time in just a few weeks, a young woman has gone missing in Australia: In all cases, she is an international exchange student, several of them from Vietnam. They all attend the Hamilton Scondary College in Adelaide and are said to have suddenly been untraceable independently of each other.

At least one exchange student has since resurfaced: On Thursday (January 11, 2024), authorities released a statement that one of the girls had been found. The others are still missing. Details about the latest missing person have now become known.

Australia: Vietnamese woman disappears from her room – four others as well

Sunnie Nguyen was even at her host family's home when she disappeared. She only had a few items in a backpack, according to reports from Daily Mail Australia, and didn't say a word about where she was going. The family is shocked.

The 17-year-old is considered shy and has problems speaking English. At around 8:2024 p.m. on Monday (January 19, 00), the eleventh grader had dinner with her host family at her home in South Plympton, Adelaide's inner southwest, before retiring to her room. Then, at around 23:00 p.m., her host mother, May Zervaas, checked into Sunnie's room – but the girl was gone. Her backpack, laptop, identity documents and clothes were also missing. At first glance, it seems as if she has escaped. But one fact is at least unusual: your social media accounts have been deleted. She is also unreachable on her phone.

According to the South Australian police, however, there is no connection between the cases. "All investigations indicate that some of these youths may have traveled interstate and are still staying there," a police spokesman said. "At this time, there is no evidence in any study that these young people are in imminent danger."

Girl missing in Australia: "Her English is not fluent"

So did all four young people simply run away from their host families? At least in Sunnie's case, her exchange sister Mary thinks this is unlikely. Sunnie seemed happy, according to Mary, and she doesn't think she ran away because she got along well with the family. Her study visa was also valid for another three years.

In any case, Mary is very worried about her exchange sister: "I've been sitting next to my phone all night, anxiously waiting for a call," Mary told Daily Mail Australia. The whole family is very worried. "Her English is not very fluent and she usually relies on someone to translate." She also left her medication at the house.

Sunnie's entourage is also being searched for clues. Authorities are working to contact the family of the missing in Vietnam. But not everyone believes in a kidnapping or a violent crime. On X, formerly Twitter, commentators expressed the suspicion that the young people had something else in mind: "They will undoubtedly apply for protection visas – this is a complete scam," says one observer.
