On Monday evening, IDF fighters opened fire at 20 suspected drug smugglers, including several armed men, who approached the border line on the Egyptian side of the barricade. After the incident, IDF forces searched the area in order to rule out a case of terrorist infiltration into Israel.
In June, IDF soldier Lia Ben Nun, 19, from Rishon LeZion, and Uri Yitzhak Illouz, 20, from Safed, were killed by Egyptian police gunfire on the Egyptian border, in an area where drug smuggling had been thwarted a few hours earlier. Hours later, the policeman was identified in Israeli territory and an exchange of fire took place.
As a result of the shooting, a soldier from the Caracal Battalion, First Sergeant Ohad Dahan, 20, from Ofakim, was killed. Minutes later, the terrorist opened fire again at the forces, who returned fire and killed him. The name of the other dead fighter has not yet been released.

Two months later, Cheetah Battalion fighters thwarted drug smuggling worth two million shekels on the Egyptian border. The incident began when IDF surveillance yesterday identified several suspects who tried to smuggle drugs from Egyptian territory into Israel in the Har Harif area.
The battalion's fighters managed to thwart the smuggling and seized 50 kilograms of drugs. The forces also seized a vehicle used by the smugglers' squad. The seized vehicles and drugs were handed over to the police.
