A diplomatic source told Israel Hayom on Monday morning that Jerusalem is working to release Israeli soccer player detained in Turkey, Sagiv Yehezkel, today.
Yehezkel released a statement today from his interrogation by the security services in the southern city of Antalya. A spokeswoman for Antalya's security services gave local media Yehezkel's statement through an interpreter, saying: "I did not act in any way to harass or upset anyone. I am not a person who supports war. After all, there are Israelis in captivity in Gaza. I am someone who believes that this period of the hundred days we went through should end now and I want the war to end."
The statement continued: "That's why I presented the gesture here. I am a person who has nothing to do with politics. I've never done anything politically related since I came to Turkey. I have never shown disrespect to anyone since I arrived. The point is that I wanted to attract attention in order to end the war."
Yehezkel was arrested yesterday after celebrating a goal he scored in the local league with a tribute marking 100 days of war and a call for the return of the hostages, which continues to generate anger and consternation in Israel.
