No time to take a deep breath for Denmark's new royal couple Frederik and Mary. First official appointment: a reception at the Danish Parliament.

Copenhagen – Barely 20 hours after their celebrated first appearance as King and Queen, Frederik X (55) and Mary (51) of Denmark returned to Christiansborg Palace. On 24 January, Queen Margrethe II (83) signed her declaration of abdication there, and the following day a ceremony in honour of King Frederik took place in the Danish parliament, called the Folketing.

Parliament reception on Monday rounds off Frederik and Mary's coronation weekend

In light snowfall in Copenhagen, Prince Joachim (54) and Princess Benedikte (79) arrived first, followed by Queen Margrethe, who is allowed to keep her title even after Frederik is appointed the new King of Denmark. Finally, Crown Prince Christian (18), Queen Mary and King Frederik also drove up in the carriage and entered the building to the cheers of the bystanders.

In the parliament hall, the members of the Danish royal family then took their seats and listened to the words of Søren Gade (60), the speaker of parliament, and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (46), whom Frederik had proclaimed king on the balcony the day before. But afterwards there was a surprise waiting for the royals present, which touched Queen Mary in particular.

The current succession to the throne in Denmark after the change of throne:

1. Crown Prince Christian (18)2. Princess Isabella (16)3. Prince Vincent (13)4. Princess Josephine (13)5. Prince Joachim (54)6. Nicolai of Denmark (24)7. Felix of Denmark (21)8. Henrik of Denmark (14)9. Athena of Denmark (11)10. Princess Benedikte (79)

Successful start for the new royal couple: Choir surprises Mary and Frederik

The DR Girls' Choir (Girls' Choir of Danish Radio) entered the Folketing Hall and sang "I Danmark er jeg født", the poem "I was born in Denmark" by Hans Christian Andersen (70, † 1975). As billedbladet.dk reports, the song is one of Queen Mary's favorite songs, she is said to have listened reverently, was very moved - and is even said to have sung along briefly. In 2017, the then Crown Princess Mary also revealed at an appointment in Copenhagen why the piece is so close to her heart.

"It's more than a song. It is a declaration of love to Denmark, to history, to language, to culture, to the landscape. It's a love song that even I, even though I wasn't born in Denmark, can feel deep in my heart," says Mary. "And I know that you don't have to be born in a country to feel at home." With statements like these, the Australian-born singer continues to score points with the Danish people, who already reverently call Mary "King Mary". Sources used: tv2.dk, billedbladet.dk
