Explosions in Yemen as US and British strikes begin/Telegram
A U.S. fighter jet intercepted an anti-ship cruise missile launched by the Houthis in Yemen at a U.S. destroyer in the southern Red Sea, the U.S. military said Monday.
The strike came days after the American-British operation against rebel targets in Yemen, which was a response to their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea as part of their support for Hamas and the Gaza Strip. The bombings are intended to weaken the Houthis' ability to threaten ships passing through the area, which is one of the world's most important shipping routes.
The Iranian-backed Houthis threatened a "harsh" response to the air and naval attacks against them. On Monday, the rebels claimed that U.S. planes had passed near Yemen's airspace and coastal areas, calling it a "flagrant" violation of their sovereignty.
Yemeni media even reported an airstrike in the port city of Hodeidah, but a security source in Washington denied it was a US operation.
