The weather continues to be uncomfortable at the beginning of the new year. It is expected to rain heavily in many places. The DWD also warns of gale force winds.
Munich – The flood situation in Germany remains tense for the time being. The emergency services are particularly concerned about soaked dikes. And the weather does not contribute to the easing of tensions in the flood areas in the coming days. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official warning.
"One low after the other is passing," predicted meteorologist Dominik Jung in a video. The focus is particularly on a low-pressure area called Dietmar. The DWD also provided information about "Atlantic low-pressure systems" that bring "very humid and mild Atlantic air to Germany".
Weather in Germany: Continuous rain forecast for the coming days
The DWD predicted continuous rain, which is expected to last until Thursday night. This also coincides with the forecast of weather expert Jung. He predicts "heavy continuous rain, thunderstorm-like continuous rain in many low mountain regions". This could further exacerbate the flood situation in the already affected regions.
In the municipality of Lilienthal (near Bremen), for example, which was affected by the floods, the dikes and the areas close to the dikes may not be entered. "If entered, there is a risk that the dikes will break, the water will spread uncontrollably and flood vulnerable areas, especially residential developments," it said. Some residents had to temporarily leave their apartments and houses. Due to the predicted weather for the coming days, the situation remains tense.
"Heavy rain": Weather in Germany remains wet - and windy
The DWD warnings range from the Alps in the south to Erfurt in the middle and Bremen in the north. There is to be widespread "sometimes heavy rain with only short interruptions". There are high quantities from Lower Saxony to the Black Forest as well as in the eastern and southeastern low mountain ranges. According to the DWD, the following water volumes are to be fell:
- At low altitudes: often 30 to 50 litres per square metre
- In the mountains, especially in accumulations: 60 to 120 litres per square metre within 30 to 60 hours.
In addition, there will be official warnings for gale force winds on Tuesday. According to the DWD, stiff to stormy gusts of between 50 and 70 kilometers per hour can often occur at low altitudes. From the afternoon, a freshening wind is also expected to arise in the north.
