A September ritual, the Emmy Awards, aka the Oscars of American television, saw their schedule disrupted by the actors' strike, which banned all promotional activities and red carpets. With harmony once again in Hollywood, the winners will finally be known tonight.

Night owl series fans will be able to follow the red carpet and the ceremony live on Canal + from 00:50. The winners will be commented on by the host of the "Cercle séries", Renan Cros and his columnists Pierre Langlais of Télérama, Charlotte Blum and Perrine Quennesson. Didier Allouch will assist them from Los Angeles. If all goes smoothly, the festivities will end shortly before 5 a.m

Conservative Emmy Awards tend to go to past winners. With a record 27 nominations, the final and fourth season of Succession is the favourite for this 76th edition. The ultimate betrayals of the infamous Roy have already made a huge sweep of the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

The Roys face the disappointing fifth season of The Crown, the distant last lap of Better Call Saul, the spin of Game Of Thrones House Of The Dragon, the Star Wars Andor saga, the detestable privileged vacationers of The White Lotus, and the survival stories Yellowjackets and The Last Of Us.

Along with Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox, three of the six Emmy nominees for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series are from Succession. Will this monopoly lead to a split of votes or not? Australian actress Sarah Snook, the clan's only heroine, is the favourite to win the Best Actress trophy. Matthew Macfadyen, who plays her poor husband and who just won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, has a good chance of being crowned again on Monday.

The Last Of Us in an unfavorable waiver

The predicted triumph of Succession's swan song should feed the regrets of two of its competitors, also produced by HBO. An adaptation of the eponymous zombie apocalypse video game, The Last of Us (24 nominations) could walk away empty-handed on Monday night, unless its stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey pull off a surprise. In any case, the dystopia has already left with a few statuettes at the beginning of the month. As there are so many categories for the Emmys, those considered technical are awarded beforehand in a ceremony called the Creative Emmy Awards. This first round saw Succession completely snubbed. On the other hand, The Last Of Us won Best Appearance by Actors (Nick Offerman) and Actresses (Storm Reid)

Meanwhile, The White Lotus (23 nominations), a chic and gritty satire, can hope to win the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series with four out of eight nominees. The only star to return in the second season of the series (which this time takes place in Sicily), Jennifer Coolidge tops the predictions.

The mini-series categories, reserved for those that have only one season, are always hotly contested. Netflix's Relentless, the story of an altercation that escalates between two motorists, and the harrowing crime story Dahmer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story are in the lead with 13 nominations. In ambush stands the most cerebral and introspective Anatomy of a Divorce.

Also acclaimed at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, The Bear, a frenetic dive into the back kitchen of a Chicago restaurant, is expected to dethrone the hegemony of Apple TV+ football comedy Ted Lasso in the comedy sections. Also on the track are the series Wednesday, Only Murders In The Building, Jury Duty. But for its first rather than second season, which will be in the running for the 2024 edition of the Emmys scheduled for September.

Sparse series

These 76th Emmy Awards should have taken place in September and reward the programs of the 2022-2023 season. The eligibility period was therefore from June 2022 to May 2023.Votes were recorded over the summer and some of the nominated series are for seasons that aired more than a year ago.

So there's no need to hope to see the stars of this fall's event sagas, such as the beautiful melodrama Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV+, starring Brie Larson. The discrepancy between this major event of American television and what viewers are currently watching is unlikely to be favourable to its ratings figures, which have been in free fall for several years.

Last year's ceremony was watched by 5.9 million viewers, even fewer than the 2020 edition, nicknamed "PandEmmys", when the stars stayed home due to lockdown.

The current postponement also means that this year's Emmys are sandwiched between several major Hollywood awards dates, including the Golden Globes and the announcement of Oscar nominations.
