Is there a threat of war between Russia and "the West"? Russia's top propagandist is at least sure of it – and backs up his prediction with Trump.

Moscow – Vladimir Putin's war propaganda has once again predicted a horror scenario on Russian state television. On the Russia 1 channel, the well-known Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov has this time sketched the picture of a possible Third World War, reports the news magazine Newsweek. "We are moving towards World War III. In my opinion, it's already running," he said. "By the way, Trump thinks the same way."

To substantiate his claims, Solovyov relies on statements made by former US President Donald Trump. Trump had claimed in connection with the attacks on the Houthi rebels in Yemen ordered by President Joe Biden that a third world war was already taking place – in fact, Trump had said that Biden was provoking this war. The enemy of Russia, according to Solovyov, is, of course, "the West."

Russia's enemy is the "collective West"

"We should understand that we are facing a terrible enemy," Solovyov said in an excerpt shared by journalist Julia Davis on X (formerly Twitter). Russia is now dealing with a "collective West". What the propagandist means is that in addition to Western countries, other nations are also positioning themselves against Russia. "The West is no longer just a geographical term," Solovyov said. However, it still seems to be suitable as an enemy image, which is why non-Western countries are simply included.

The narrative of the "evil West" is not uncommon on Russian state television. Solovyov in particular paints this picture in almost every broadcast. At the same time, the top propagandist does not shy away from direct threats. He has already noted that Russia has ways and means to destroy the United States.

According to Putin's top propagandist, "the West" is already "preparing for war"

"They will get their economy going," Solovyov predicts in his broadcast, referring to the Western states. "More than 50 countries" are thus preparing for a war against Russia and its allies. In the show, he wants to back up this statement with Donald Trump, of all people. However, he only succeeds in doing so at the second attempt. A technical glitch seems to be preventing the Trump cutout.

When it finally works, a video clip from a rally in Des Moines, Iowa is shown. Trump says that a looming World War III "will not be a normal war." If a global military conflict were to take place, "weapons of mass destruction would be used on a scale the world has never seen before."

Russia wants to prevent support for Ukraine with threats

The fact that Putin himself wanted to start World War III with the attack on Ukraine is considered by some experts to be far-fetched. "That's very unlikely. Putin is concerned about Ukraine," Carlo Masala, a political scientist at the University of the Bundeswehr, told ZDF last spring. "If he were to attack a NATO member, he would be at war with Nato, and Putin has no interest in that." Masala also considers the use of nuclear weapons to be very unlikely. Most of his colleagues would agree with this, reports the Augsburger Allgemeine.

Solovyov, however, wants to maintain the threatening gesture. Russia repeatedly threatens Western governments with attacks. In doing so, the Kremlin wants to prevent support for Ukraine. "Vladimir Putin wants to remind the West that Russia is a nuclear power. (...) If the ordered alert then prevents one or the other state from supplying weapons to Ukraine, Russia's president is already quite satisfied," Masala said. (nhi)
