In the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, a woman gave birth to quadruplets over the weekend. The probability of this happening is two in a million.

Ljubljana - Quadruplet births are an extremely rare occurrence in humans. Such a pregnancy is also not a risky undertaking. But a 31-year-old woman from Bosnia-Herzegovina managed to give birth to four healthy boys last weekend in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, thanks to doctors.

Matej (weighing 1,450 grams), Luka (1,030 grams), Marko (1,420 grams) and Jovan (weighing 1,280 grams) were born by caesarean section in the maternity ward of the University Hospital of Ljubljana. "The whole pregnancy, which is extremely risky due to multiple fertility, was supervised in Ljubljana from the very beginning," the clinic writes in a Facebook post. The experts of the clinic would have helped to carry out the birth at a satisfactory stage of pregnancy and in the end also to a good outcome.

Quadruple pregnancies occur twice in a million

The head of the maternity hospital, Gorazd Kav, reports: "The last similar quadruplets in Ljubljana were born in 2015."
The probability of a quadruplet birth is very low: about one in 500,000 pregnancies or less. "For Slovenia, that would mean about once in 15 to 20 years," Kav adds. Since it was not artificial insemination, this quadruplet birth was particularly remarkable.

The chief physician adds: "In addition to the extremely rare constellation of quadruplets, successful delivery is even rarer, so it is not surprising that in Banja Luka, where the mother comes from, the event is called a true miracle. We congratulate the courageous mother and her four children and the dedicated staff of our maternity clinic from the bottom of our hearts!"

The father Nemjana P., who lives with his wife Milana in Celje in Slovenia, thanks on Facebook for the care in the clinic: "We are really grateful to the whole team of the University Hospital Ljubljana. They were very nice and professional, from the first check-ups to the end of the pregnancy."

The grandmother is completely over the moon about the birth of the quadruplets

The couple already had a son Konstantin in 2019. The grandmother is very excited: "Today I am the happiest, proudest and richest woman in the world. My daughter gave birth to four grandchildren," Ranka G. posted on Facebook. "Thank you to God, thank you to St. Basil and all the saints. I congratulate my daughter Milana and my son-in-law Nemanja, and especially my eldest grandson Konstantin, who has four brothers today."

Also very rare is a "double pregnancy", in the medical sensation a woman has two wombs and carries a child in each.
