The super-rich have doubled their wealth since 2020 – including in Germany. Here you can get an idea of how much they own.

While life has become more expensive in recent years (which scares many), the rich have become even richer, according to Oxfam. The gap between rich and poor has widened, the development organization Oxfam announced on Monday, January 15, 2024.

According to the report, the five richest people in the world – all men – have more than doubled their wealth since 2020. At the same time, nearly five billion people, the poorest 60 percent, became even poorer. If things continue like this, the world would have its first dollar trillionaire in ten years. Global poverty, on the other hand, would still not be completely overcome in 230 years.

Five richest Germans have 142 billion euros

In Germany, too, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The total wealth of the five richest Germans has grown by almost 2020 percent since 75, adjusted for inflation, from about 89 to about 155 billion US dollars, i.e. around 142 billion euros.

Quite a lot of money. But what could you actually do with this sum? BuzzFeed News Germany has calculated this using an everyday example that we all know: the kebab. (Here are 13 kebab crimes you want to report)

1. You could lay out half of Berlin with kebabs

Let's say a kebab costs 7.50 euros. Then you can afford around 18 billion kebabs from the assets of the five richest Germans. If a kebab (lying down) takes up about 12 cm x 20 cm of space (0.024 m²), then these 18 billion kebabs fill an area of 450 million square meters (450 km²) – that's about half the area of Berlin.
