The board of directors of the Herrsching water rescue group announced its resignation at the weekend. What will happen next is currently uncertain.

Herrsching – Bang at the Herrsching local group of the BRK water rescue: Chairwoman Fiona Kemp, her deputy Felix Schärfl, technical director Leon Gambihler, the treasurers Michael Schreiner and Christine Schneider as well as the youth leaders Verena Alvez and Hannah Furjanic let the district association and the members of the local group know at the weekend that they are no longer available for the board. Fiona Kemp agreed with this decision on sick leave. Gambihler's deputy, Phillip Hildebrand, had already resigned from his office in May and had resigned from the local group. The current board members do not want to go that far. "We remain members of the local group and are happy to support our successors with words and deeds. We will continue to actively support the local group – just no longer in leadership positions," says Leon Gambihler. "It's built up a lot over time. Board work is fulfilling, but also time-consuming and not always easy." However, everyone has their own personal motivations.

At the last general meeting in March 2023, everything had sounded so good: the number of members increased, innovative ideas such as a sponsorship campaign brought results. The youth group was pleased to have 32 members. At that time, the local group was supported by 116 supporting members. Club life seemed to be flourishing again after the Corona years.

For Gambihler, a number of factors played a role – both internally and externally. "If, in addition to the internal problems, there are also external ones, it will be the straw that breaks the camel's back," he says. The financial situation of the district association also played a role in his decision, apart from the fact that he had been alone as technical director since May. In the end, his private life, his job and the time required for volunteering were no longer compatible for him. Felix Schärfl, who recently held the presidency de facto alone, does not want to comment on this at all. "Everything else is now decided by the district association, especially the district water rescue service."

It is not certain what will happen next. "We had the idea of inviting people to a general meeting as soon as possible, perhaps in February," says Gambihler. The central item on the agenda would be the by-election of the entire board of directors for one year. According to the schedule, new elections would not be held until next year, so it is also possible to have an interim leadership until the new elections. The question is which of the 55 active members will be willing to succeed him. The district water rescue service could not provide an answer yesterday, the news was still too fresh for its chairman Markus Schmolz and press spokesman Oliver Jauch.
