Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said Tuesday during the World Economic Forum in Davos that "the only [diplomatic] track that is active is negotiations on the release of hostages in exchange for a ceasefire."
Al-Thani referred to the day after the war in the Gaza Strip, explaining that it would be difficult to rehabilitate the region without a political solution on the horizon. "Given the scale of the bombings and destruction in Gaza - Gaza no longer exists, there is nothing there - an entire city needs to be rebuilt," he said. "I don't see that we can go back to what it was before October 7 and that countries will invest money there unless we deal with the issue of the two-state solution. There are politicians who thought that the Palestinian issue could be hidden beneath the ground and that people would forget. What happened on October 7 showed that this is a major issue for the whole world."
"Ready for peace with Israel - if the peace process with the Palestinians is advanced." Prime Minister of Qatar/Reuters
The Qatari prime minister said that a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be promoted that will require any Israeli government in power. According to him, the internal Palestinian split must be resolved. "Hamas is part of the Palestinian political system and only the Palestinian people will decide whether they will be part of the solution. It's not an Israeli decision and it's not our decision," he said. "We and the other Arab states are ready for peace with Israel if they advance the peace process with the Palestinians."
