Snowfall will move over from the southwest during the coming night, but this will then turn into freezing rain. This entails a high risk of black ice.
Munich – The hat-trick will be completed on Wednesday, 17 January: It started with a wintry cold weekend, followed by heavy snowfall at the start of the week. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), freezing rain is then threatening in the coming night. This is especially dangerous for people on the street, whether in cars or on foot.
Danger from freezing rain: DWD warns of weather conditions
On Tuesday, 16 January, it is expected to clear up throughout Bavaria during the day, but in the evening, according to meteorologists from the German Weather Service, snowfall will start again - coming from the southwest. In the night to Wednesday, however, this will turn into rain: "In the coming night, initially snowfall from the southwest, Wednesday morning turning into freezing rain," summarizes the DWD in the current warning situation report.
Accordingly, the warning for the entire Free State, which is implemented in bright red in the DWD warning map: It is an "official severe weather warning for black ice". The statement reads: "There is a high risk of slippery roads due to freezing rain and ice build-up. Initially light snowfall, rapid transition to freezing rain!"

"Danger to life and limb": DWD urgently warns of danger of black ice
Regarding the possible dangers associated with the black ice, the German Weather Service writes:
Danger to life and limb due to sudden freezing rain. Recommendations for action: Spend time outdoors and avoid driving or adapt behaviour in road traffic; be prepared for disruptions on all traffic routes, up to and including closures/closures, adapt your driving style if necessary, fill up your tank as much as possible, carry blankets and warm drinks with you."

The warning is currently in effect from 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning until 16 p.m. in the afternoon. In addition, the DWD writes that there may be a lot of fresh snow again during the day on Wednesday. Namely "in parts of Swabia, Middle Franconia and Upper Bavaria 1-5 centimeters of fresh snow". Until Thursday, "larger amounts of fresh snow of 10-20 centimeters cannot be ruled out in northern Franconia," the warning situation report concludes. (FHZ)
