For the elaborate reconstruction after the flood in the Ahr valley, a restaurateur receives a bad rating on the net. This causes incomprehension and anger.

Mayschoß – It's been more than two years since the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. In July 2021, 135 people lost their lives and 17,000 people lost their homes. The people in the region are still struggling with the financial damage and the reconstruction of their homes. The restaurateur Thorsten Rech was directly affected by this. He reports that he even had to get bad reviews for it. This is causing outrage on the Internet, as did the recent review of a guest in the Harz Mountains.

"Of course it was complicated": Restaurateur is working on reopening more than two years after flood

After more than two years, the time had come again: Rech was finally able to reopen his restaurant Platform 1 in Mayschoß. That's how long it took to rebuild his restaurant. In a video on Facebook, he explains the condition of the building after the flood: "We just had to tear everything out of here." According to the report, the restaurant was so badly damaged that the operator decided to create "a completely new platform 1" – with a new concept: instead of the restaurant, the restaurant is now to serve primarily as a vinotheque and event venue.

At the beginning of last year, "Platform 1" was still a construction site – now it has reopened for the first time since the flood in the Ahr Valley. © Facebook / Furtwangen helps in the Ahr Valley

"Of course, that was complicated," explains Lech, because, among other things, the entire half-timbered façade had to be knocked out and rebuilt with clay. In addition, all partition walls had to be removed. A process that took a lot of time. As a result, the guests of platform 1 had to do without their restaurant for a long time – and this at a time when the catering industry is already in crisis.

Due to flood renovation: Restaurant receives worst rating on the net

Apparently, one guest didn't understand this. On Tripadvisor.de, he therefore gives platform 1 the worst possible rating. The man's reasoning: "Not yet open to the public. Currently not open to the public due to renovation."

This is not good news for the restaurateur, after all, reviews on the Internet are not insignificant for the success of a company. Bad reviews could scare off potential guests. But Lech takes the review with humor and shared it on Facebook: "Writing an email or calling would also be a really absurd idea. Very valuable contribution anyway. We would like to thank you very much for your support." Less humorous is a car dealership owner who insulted his customers on the Internet.

"Angry and speechless": Net outraged by bad rating for restaurateur

But many people who obviously know the restaurateur don't take the whole thing so lightly. One user shared the post and commented: "It's exactly these situations that make me angry and speechless." He explains: "There is a passionate restaurateur who rebuilt with a lot of courage and commitment after the flood disaster in 2021 and is still in parts," and points to the personal fate of the restaurateur. "A person who never gave up despite exactly these high burdens."

Then he refers to the review: "And now some idiot comes along, who without sense and reason makes an assessment that is simply harmful and can hardly be surpassed in terms of infamy." Many people on the net agree. One man commented: "It's incomprehensible to evaluate something you didn't use." Another writes: "When I go to the Ahr Valley, it's to be happy about every little progress and that one day it will be as perfect and beautiful there as it was before the flood."

However, the phenomenon does not seem to be unknown. One woman describes in the comments: "The Gasthaus Bunte Kuh in Walporzheim has also received bad reviews because there is still some construction site." She explains: "Unfortunately, you hear things like this far too often and at the expense of restaurateurs based on bad reviews." (bk)
