Magistrates union ANM said Thursdaythat Justice Minister Carlo Nordio's bill clamping down on thepublication ofinformation from wiretaps from criminal investigations amountedto "unacceptable" government control of the actions of thejudiciary, reiterating their criticism of the bill.
The clampdown seeks to stop the reputations of innocent peoplebeing damaged by recordings of private conversations appearingin the press.
The article bans the publication of wiretaps involving thirdparties in criminal investigations - it will not even bepossible to transcribe the data regarding these people.
"There is a strong disagreement with Minister Nordio onwiretapping," Anm president Giuseppe Santalucia told SkyTg24.
"He talks about excessive expenditure, but compared to what? "Herecognises that there are mafia and terrorism investigationsthat are important and should be kept away from reforms thatwould squeeze the instrument.
"On those proceedings much of the expenditure is poured. Whatdoes he want to cut back on?""Throughout the country there is already a single tariffschedule,' Santalcia added, saying "it seems to me a problemsolved.
"The problem is that he believes there are some interceptionsthat should not be made.
"But it is not acceptable that the executive power through thebudget should control judicial activity".
