The automotive supplier Continental has to save money - and, according to a report, is now terminating the 40-hour week for 1,600 employees.

You will then have to accept a reduction in salary.

Hanover - It is no longer a secret that the car supplier and tire manufacturer Continental has to save money: The DAX group has been in crisis in the car supply sector for a long time and is struggling to stay operationally in the black.

Now we need to save a lot.

This also affects employees with 40-hour contracts, as has now been announced.

Continental: Thousands of employees face salary cuts

According to a report by

Wirtschaftswoche,

the group terminated the contracts of 1,600 collective bargaining employees from the automotive division with a 40-hour week.

Accordingly, in the future they should only work the collectively agreed 35 hours.

This probably means significantly less money for those affected.

Continental did not want to quantify how high the salary losses would be to the magazine, but confirmed the process.

In addition, according to the report, the hour reductions would affect all areas outside of production, research and development - for example in sales or controlling.

At individual locations it could also affect other areas, but this only has “local relevance,” a spokesman told

Wirtschaftswoche

.

According to the report, automotive works council head Lorenz Pfau criticized the dismissals.

In an internal letter to employees, he accused Conti management of “a rigorous Holzschnitt-brand savings program”: “400 million euros should be saved as quickly as possible – whatever the cost.”

Continental: job cuts and restructuring planned

With the 400 million euros, Pfau refers to the planned annual cost relief that became known in the fall and is expected to take effect in the administrative area from 2025.

There is also a risk of thousands of job cuts.

Division boss Philipp von Hirschheydt wants to streamline the administrative structures and thus accelerate the decision-making processes.

Among other things, business areas will be bundled more closely; the previous six will become five.

At the end of September, the automotive supply business had 102,574 employees, and the group as a whole had 203,593.

Continental plans to make all measures as socially acceptable as possible, the company said.

In addition, research and development spending will come under scrutiny.

“These measures increase efficiency and effectiveness and strengthen our competitiveness,” said von Hirschheydt.

Conti has been in crisis in the automotive supply sector for a long time and is struggling to stay operationally in the black in the business of - among other things - brakes, interior equipment, sensors and electronics.
