After the maternity ward at Schongau Hospital closed, three more babies were born in the city.
We took a look at the numbers from the registry office and citizen services.
Schongau - Let's start with a little outlook: "A Schongau resident can look forward to a special anniversary this year and celebrate his
100th birthday
," says Martin Keßler from the Schongau citizen service.
Together with Jessica Stammle from the registry office, he looked up figures on population development at the request of the local newspaper.
Last year,
13,111 people were registered in Schongau
- 119 more than in 2022. This means that the number of residents in Schongau continues to grow.
For comparison: 12,742 people were registered in the city in 2021, and 12,692 in 2020.
This is how many people moved to Schongau in 2023
A total of 992 people moved
to Schongau last year
(in 2022 there were 1,180).
821 people
left
the city (2022: 868).
In 2023, a total of 2,875 people who came from abroad were counted among the residents.
As in previous years, the largest group – 504 people – comes from Turkey.
Last year there were about the same number, 501 people.
They were followed by Ukrainians for the first time in 2023.
202 people were registered in Schongau, compared to 155 last year. 190 Schongau residents come from Kosovo (2022: 179), 184 from Croatia (186) and 166 from Romania (165).
68 weddings, exactly ten fewer than in 2022, were celebrated in Schongau last year.
Since mid-2022, couples have been able to get married in the Serenadenhof - in addition to the council chamber in the Ballenhaus and the meeting room in the town hall.
The place is well received and people are usually lucky with the weather, says Stammle.
There would have been around 12 marriages there.
“The vast majority of marriages still take place in our beautiful council chamber in the Ballenhaus.”
There is also an innovation in Schongau when it comes to burial: Since March 2023, you can be buried with your pet in a common grave at both cemeteries.
However, there has not yet been a so-called human-animal burial.
But some have already found out about it.
A total of 234 deaths were recorded in Schongau last year.
There were 306 deaths in 2022 and 298 in 2021.
These names were popular for babies in Schongau in 2023
Due to the closure of the maternity ward at the Schongau Hospital at the end of April, significantly fewer children were born in the Lechstadt in 2023.
167 births were registered by the registry office.
“The majority of them were of course born in the hospital from January to April, and there were three more home births in the following months,” says Stammle.
For comparison: there were 527 births last year.
In 2021 there were even 616 births.
27 of the children born in Schongau were also registered in the city in 2023, so they also have their home here.

While in previous years there were usually clear favorite names for newborn girls and boys, which were often given seven or eight times in one year, things look different for 2023.
Many names were given the same number of times, explains Stammle.
The
girls
chose the name Sophia about three times.
The names Anna, Diana, Emma, Lina, Linda, Marie and Marina were given twice each.
A similar picture emerges for the
boys
: new parents chose the names Hannes and Alexander three times.
And the names Anton, Georg, Jakob, Jonas and Jonathan, Karl, Kilian, Luis, Maximilian, Moritz, Sebastian and Vitus were chosen twice each.
The majority of the children, namely 91, were only given a single first name.
73 children have two first names and three children even have three.
No more first names were given to a child in 2023.
