For the “Zörnerhaus” on Bahnhofstrasse, the PM parliamentary group has proposed a facade art campaign with graffiti, large-format privacy screens and a “green oasis” © or painting.

The building has belonged to the city for three years.

There is a new idea for the crumbling “Zörnerhaus” in downtown Penzberg.

The “Penzberg Miteinander” (PM) faction suggests turning the facade into an art project with graffiti, photos or paintings.

It is not the first proposal for the house, which the city of Penzberg bought three years ago.

Penzberg - The PM parliamentary group has proposed turning the crumbling facade of the “Zörnerhaus” on Bahnhofstrasse into an art project for a transitional period.

According to the proposal, the walls on the southwest and northwest sides, both of which can be seen from the street, could be temporarily “opened for facade painting, graffiti or large-scale photographic art by students from secondary schools in Penzberg under professional supervision.”

The PM group has submitted a corresponding application to the city and the city council.

“Most deplorable sight in the middle of the city”

Many fellow citizens would find the current sight an imposition, argues the PM group.

She herself speaks of the “most deplorable sight in the middle of the city”.

Neglected places, she warns, can become “non-places” and “even invite misbehavior.”

On the other hand, according to the PM group, there is no doubt that the city currently lacks the money for its “own development” – i.e. for demolition and new construction or for renovation.

That's why creativity is required, it says in the application.

With an “artistic facade design, the city could show “its open face to the world, art and culture in a prominent place”.

This would also have given her time to make the house habitable.

“Facade art” with graffiti, photos and murals

The PM group suggests that secondary schools or, for example, cultural associations apply to oversee such a project by the end of February.

A possible start could be in September 2024.

The project topic would be presented to the city council beforehand.

After implementation, according to the PM group, the house should not be demolished for twelve months or the facade should not be affected during a renovation.

Impressive examples in many cities

In its proposal, the group distinguishes between the “facade art” it proposes and “wild, illegal spraying or graffiti” that constitutes damage to property.

According to her, what is meant is not the traditional Lüftl paintings, “which would not suit Penzberg”.

The PM group writes that in many cities there are impressive examples of contemporary art projects on facades “that bring public space to life, stimulate reflection, wonder and discussion”.

Because of the look of the old building on Bahnhofstrasse, there had already been suggestions in the past.

Last spring, SPD city council member Hardi Lenk ("It looks disastrous, it can't stay like this") suggested putting a beautifully designed banner on the front facade facing Bahnhofstrasse, for example with the words "We are looking forward to it State Garden Show”.

CSU has proposed a “green oasis”.

Last August, the CSU parliamentary group applied to demolish the “Zörnerhaus” and create “a temporary green area” with seating, loungers and play facilities on the entire property, as a “green oasis in the middle of the city center”.

The city council has not yet discussed Hardi Lenk's proposal or the proposals from the CSU and PM factions.

The city of Penzberg bought the building at Bahnhofstrasse 30 diagonally opposite the Christ the King Church at the end of 2020.

The Zörner butcher's shop used to be located there, whose lettering can still be seen on the facade today.

Since then, there has been discussion about what should happen to the two-story, empty house.

Use as a “house of clubs”, a multi-generational house or a senior citizens’ meeting point was ruled out very early on.

The “Kunstzeche” association wanted to use the building for exhibitions and art courses from time to time.

The city, however, leaned towards a sale.

In any case, the property was earmarked as a “source of income” for 2.5 million euros in the 2023 financial budget.

Apparently there was no sale, which may have been due to the city council itself.

The CSU parliamentary group wrote in its “Green Oasis” application last August: “Selling the property is out of the question for us as a parliamentary group.”
