A 36-year-old illegal resident from Sri Lanka was arrested yesterday (Thursday) in Jerusalem on suspicion of kidnapping and imprisoning a 21-year-old young woman and blackmailing her mother.

The police located the woman and released her.

The suspect's detention was extended today in court for another five days.

The investigation was opened after the woman's mother, a foreign citizen from Sri Lanka staying in Israel with a residence permit, reported to the police that her daughter had been kidnapped, and that the kidnapper she knew demanded that she pay him a ransom in exchange for her release.

After the mother's interrogation, last night, the detectives of the Jerusalem Police Department arrived at the apartment where the kidnapper and his daughter Babu Ghosh were staying. There the police arrested the suspect and the young woman he kidnapped, while she was safe and sound and held in one of the rooms of the house. She was returned to the mother's lap, after her testimony was collected by the police.

A preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the suspect entered Israel illegally from the Jordanian border, and was also involved in the smuggling of additional illegal residents.

He also kidnapped the woman on various pretexts, and made her come with him to the apartment in Abu Ghosh, took her cell phone, put her in the room and held her there by force against her will.

The investigation at the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court continues with the aim of bringing him to justice.
