Alain Finkielkraut did not hide it from his loved ones or his friends: he feared having reached the end of his work.
To have nothing more to say.
Or worse yet, to be condemned to repeating yourself.
He was wrong, obviously, but this worry was ruining his life, I think.
Then inspiration came back to him.
The philosopher found in autobiographical meditation a new breath and a new way of approaching the world that inhabits him and that he inhabits.
He committed to this by taking the challenge of responding to those who from time to time criticize him for quoting too much, as if he could only express his thoughts by borrowing the words of others.
This was obviously a foolish reproach.
Because Finkielkraut's thoughts are not confined to a quote.
Rather, it serves as a starting point, each time, and for a long time, to initiate a conversation with an author which will ultimately allow him to go further in the deployment of his own reflection.
