The transport and infrastructure ministry headed by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini on Friday criticized Bologna city council's decision to impose a 30 km/h speed limit.
The ministry said the move "does not appear to be a reasonable choice because the problems for citizens (especially workers) risk outweighing the benefits for road safety, which in any case remains a top priority for Minister Matteo Salvini".
The statement added that the ministry was ready to open talks with the local council to seek "alternative solutions" and prevent the limit being overturned anyway by a legal challenge, citing the precedent of what happened with Milan's requirement for heavy goods vehicles to be equipped with blind spot devices .
