Electric cars are also becoming increasingly interesting as used cars.

How should the market and offers be assessed in 2024?

Studies and experts clarify.

Munich – The market situation for electric cars has changed in the past few months: Until recently, electric cars were expensive or unaffordable as new cars, but the prices for numerous models have recently fallen noticeably.

As far as the car market in Germany is concerned, the abolition of the state purchase premium plays a role, and the increased competitive environment and the discount offensive by pioneer Tesla are forcing car manufacturers like Volkswagen to adjust their pricing strategy in order to bring new vehicles to the man or woman.

What does the drop in electric car prices mean on the used car market?

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), around two thirds of car sales took place there last year; it is the largest car transshipment point.

Electric cars as used cars: How reliable are electric cars?

It is also about the question of what the technical reliability is like after buying an electric car.

According to the study, experts agree that purchasing a used car with an electric motor has no fewer advantages or disadvantages than a vehicle with a combustion engine.

Electrical specialist Maximilian Fichtner gives his experience: “Cars like Tesla models from 2017 are good examples.

Many that were sold used in 2021 still had more than 95 percent of their battery capacity.

This underlines that used electric cars can be of high quality,” the professor and director of the Helmholtz Institute for Electrochemical Energy Storage (Ulm) is quoted as saying.

According to AutoScout24

, the expert in battery research and technology explains

that the experiences are supported by electric car studies from the USA and Sweden.

“Battery pope” Fichtner also points out that before buying a used electric vehicle, a “state of health test” from institutions such as TÜV or ADAC is essential in order to “ensure clarity”.

Used cars in Germany: Prices for electric cars at record levels in 2022

In addition to the technical condition, the price is also important when buying a used car: As the portal describes, a new electric car in Germany would currently cost between 22,000 and 100,000 euros.

This is too expensive for many people, which is why people are increasingly turning to used electric vehicles.

But second-hand electric cars have also become noticeably more expensive in this country since 2021: in that year, the average purchase price was still 33,200 euros.

The following year (2022) the amount for an electric car rose to around 44,000 euros.

The study gives the following reasons:

  • increased energy costs

  • general inflation as a brake on purchases

  • Bottlenecks in semiconductors in car production

  • Impact and aftereffects of the corona pandemic

Electric car offers: Prices for electric vehicles have recently fallen rapidly

However, as the study explains, a trend reversal has now begun on the used car market: With the increasing spread of electric cars and numerous new models, the number of electric car offerings is inevitably increasing - and this has an impact on the purchase costs.

AutoScout24

explains that the prices for a used electric car have fallen continuously since autumn 2022; in 2023 the average price was only 36,703 euros.

Consumers in Germany are increasingly benefiting from electrical leasing returns that come onto the market as young used vehicles, resulting in a “continuous price improvement”.

Used cars in Germany: One category is more expensive than electric cars

Overall, electric cars continue to be among the most expensive used cars in this country, despite the fall in prices.

However, there is a category that requires even higher expenses when buying a car: hybrid models.

The evaluation of the price development in 2023:

  • Hybrid vehicles: 39,894 euros

  • Electric cars: 36,703 euros

  • Models with diesel drive: 29,631 euros

  • Models with petrol engines: 26,281 euros

  • Meanwhile, the study reveals in which EU country people have to dig deep into their pockets to buy an electric car: it is Belgium, where an average of 52,834 euros was due last year.

Austria is in second place with 44,274 euros.

The Federal Republic (36,703) ranks fourth when it comes to electrified vehicles, behind the Netherlands with 40,605 euros.
