Chancellor Olaf Scholz will emphasize the need to increase defense spending as early as 2022.

Now Pistorius is stepping up.

Berlin - According to the Federal Ministry of Defense, the war in Ukraine clearly shows how crucial military strength is to maintaining freedom in Europe.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted as early as 2022 and granted a large financial package for the military - and coined the well-known phrase “the turning point”.

Germany, Scholz said at the time, was determined to strengthen its defense capabilities and ensure the country's security.

Now more actions are likely to follow: Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is upgrading the navy and receiving new surface drones and attack helicopters.

New surface drone Sonobot 5 for the navy

The German-British Pioneer Bridge Battalion 130 has received Sonobot 5 surface drones.

Weighing 27 kilograms, Sonobot 5 is a catamaran with a 120 millimeter draft, powered by two electric propellers, with an impressive measuring speed of 1.5 meters per second.

These drones enable the rapid preparation of tactical water crossings.

They are intended to be used for effective and precise water exploration.

Sonobot 5 is equipped with an echo sounder, side view sonar, multibeam sonar, an HD video and photo camera and an optional underwater camera.

The drone can operate autonomously and can operate for nine hours on one set of batteries.

According to the Bundeswehr, this drone is one of the fastest floating unmanned sonar systems in the world.

The technology allows pioneers to precisely locate objects hidden under water such as scrap metal, mines and shoals.

The Sonobot 5 replaces the previous water depth recording device and offers pioneers an advanced method for measuring and evaluating water profiles for the establishment of transition points.

In addition to the new surface drones, the German Navy's future multi-role frigate helicopter NH90-MRFH Sea Tiger completed its first flight at Airbus Helicopters in Donauwörth on November 30th.
