“Our body needs a constant temperature when it is cold in order to ensure that the internal organs are supplied regardless of the cold air that flows in.

When you exercise outdoors, the veins in your arms and legs contract to bring more blood to the inside of the body and provide warmth there in order to protect the vital organs there,” said Renate Scheunemann, environmental medicine specialist at the health department.

In addition, the heart tries to bring blood to the entire body and therefore increases its pumping performance.

This means stress for the heart - the coronary arteries can also narrow, according to Scheunemann.

The health department gives advice on how citizens can prevent cold weather

The environmental doctor emphasized: “Physical exertion, such as shoveling snow or exercise, even a walk in the cold, can, in the worst case, lead to a heart attack.” However, she added that heart patients should still pay attention to regular exercise, as it is for personal reasons well-being and contribute to lowering blood pressure.

Her recommendation: to breathe through a cloth or scarf wrapped over your mouth and nose during physical exertion in the cold outside air.

It is also advisable to possibly adjust the medication dosage after individual consultation with your doctor.

“Fit people also benefit from a warming layer over their mouth and nose when doing sports in the cold.

This means that the air reaches the respiratory tract already warmed up.

This way everyone gets through the winter well, which also has its nice sides.”

German Heart Foundation: Chest pain and shortness of breath in winter “don’t take it lightly”

The German Heart Foundation also warns that low temperatures can put strain on the heart.

Heart patients should therefore be particularly careful at temperatures below zero degrees and avoid great exertion.

Studies have shown that the number of heart attacks actually increases on very cold days, according to the foundation's website.

“Chest pain or shortness of breath should therefore not be taken lightly, especially in winter,” explained heart specialist Thomas Voigtländer, deputy chairman of the board of the German Heart Foundation.

“If a previously healthy person goes out into the cold and suddenly experiences pain, pressure or burning in the chest and shortness of breath, then that is a warning sign.

A doctor should be consulted immediately to have the heart examined thoroughly.” According to the information, the symptoms could possibly be harbingers of a heart attack.
